Rita D. Bawiec (Zakutansky) 78, a lifelong Bayonne resident, passed away at home on Thursday, September 28, 2017 with her loving family by her side.

Prior to her retirement in 1996, Rita was employed as a crossing guard with the Hudson County Police Department for 30 years working at the 32nd St. and Kennedy Blvd. location where she connected with the community making lifelong friendships.

Rita had a zest for life and will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by all. Her favorite places to visit included, Atlantic City, Las Vegas, Arizona and Delaware.  She enjoyed playing cards with her lifelong friends and was always up for a good game of pinochle. 

Rita was predeceased by her parents, Michael and Helen Adamiak brother Gary Adamiak; her brother-in-law Frank Rapczynski; her nephew Peter Rapczynski; her sister-in-law Mary Fogu and her husband Peter; and brother-in-laws, Mathew and Andy Bawiec. Left to cherish her memory are her beloved husband of 59 years,  Joseph Bawiec, her daughter Linda Bawiec; her son Joseph and his wife Paula; her adored grandchildren, Kaitlin Wallace and her husband Riley, and Lauren;  her sister Deborah Rapczynski; nieces, Amanda and Samantha Rapczynski, nephews, Tommy, Richie, and Sonny Fogu; and great-nephew Joshua Rapczynski.

A visitation will be held on Sunday, October 1, from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm. A funeral mass in Rita’s honor will be offered on Monday, October 2, at  10:00 a.m. at St. John Paul II Parish of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington, NJ.
