Mary Rath, (nee: Szefler), age 99, a lifelong Bayonne resident, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 10, 2019 at Peace Care St. Ann’s in Jersey City. Mary worked as a machine operator for Western Electric for more than 15 years and prior to that she worked as a clerk for General Motors.
She was an active volunteer with the Red Cross blood drives and was a longtime member of many local social groups and organizations including the Mt. Carmel Seniors, the Prime of Life Club, the Ladies Auxiliary American Legion Post 19, past president of the Joyce Herbert Ladies Auxiliary Post 226, and the Knights of Columbus Alhambra’s.
Mary was known throughout her circle of friends for her warm smile and zest for life. She enjoyed dancing and going to the YMCA where she was an active swimmer until the age of 90.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband Wilbur (1984) her parents, Vincent and Mary (Kowalska) Szefler, her sister Hedwig Wisniewski, and brothers, Joseph, Adam, and Casimir Szefler. Left to cherish her memory are her brother John Szefler and her sister Martha Carpenter and many loving nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, and her dear caregiver Yoselyn Jerez.
A visitation will be held at the Dworzanski & Son Funeral Home on Friday, March 15, from 8:45 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. A funeral mass in Mary’s honor will be offered at 11:00 a.m. at St. John Paul II Parish. Interment will follow at Holy Name Cemetery, Jersey City.
