Fernando A. Castillo entered eternal rest on February 19, 2025. Born on July 31, 1946, in Guatemala City, Guatemala, he came to the United States in 1956 when he was 10 years old. Fernando lived at St. Joseph’s School for the Blind, where he met his former wife, the late Mildred Castillo (nee Simpson). He has been a longtime resident of Jersey City since then.
Fernando was a dedicated sports fan with a particular passion for boxing. He admired legendary boxers such as Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, and Hector Camacho. Beyond sports, he found joy in music where his playlists were filled with the timeless classics of The Eagles, the Bee Gees, Fleetwood Mac, and The Beatles. Cooking was another of Fernando's great passions. He loved immersing himself in culinary shows, learning from iconic chefs like Julia Child, Emeril Lagasse, and Wolfgang Puck. Fernando enjoyed every opportunity to take his children out to dine at some of his favorite restaurants including Beefsteak Charlie’s in New York and The Canton in Jersey City.
Fernando was predeceased by his parents, Maria Marina Figueroa de Castillo and Fernando Hipolito Castillo Alvarez, and two sisters, Maria del Rosario Castillo Figueroa (Chayito) and Telma Rosalia Castillo Figueroa (Chaly). Left to cherish his memory are his five children: Marina,
Lisa, Arlene, Kimberly, and Fernando; his 13 grandchildren: Melissa, Joshua, Jessica, Jasmine, Jiovanni, Martha, Gloria, Pedro, Xavier, Monica, Jazlina, Celeste, Fernando Jr., 24 great-grandchildren, and his siblings, Iris Jeanette Castillo Figueroa and Aura Violeta Castillo Figueroa, as well as a host
of nieces and nephews, and his best friends Frank and Nabil.
