Janina Obolewicz entered into eternal rest peacefully on March 26, 2026, with her loving daughters by her side.
Born in Poland to parents Jan and Marianna Antoszczuk, Janina was a toddler when World War II began, and Poland was invaded, a time during which she lost her mother. In the years that followed, her father instilled strong values and a deep sense of purpose within the family. From those early influences, Janina developed a strong work ethic, taking on responsibilities at a young age and laying the foundation that guided her throughout her life.
In 1960, Janina came to the United States to build a new life, where she met her beloved husband, William W. Obolewicz. They were married soon after they settled in Bayonne and began their family, embracing this new chapter with devotion and deep fulfillment.
After her retirement, Janina embraced the opportunity to travel, enjoying cruises to South America, Europe, the Caribbean, the Mediterranean, and various destinations beyond the United States. In her leisure time, she enjoyed sewing and the comforts of home. Janina was admired by many for her love of dancing, especially the polka, which reflected her joyful nature. She treasured gatherings during the holiday season and other special family occasions.
Lovingly known as “Mamus” to her daughters, Janina took immense pride in the women they became, seeing in them the reflection of her strength, discipline, and unwavering encouragement. Her elder daughter, Yola, earned her Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, while her younger daughter, Annette, became a Medical Doctor, Neuroradiologist. Their accomplishments were a source of great pride and a testament to the values Janina instilled. As “Babcia,” she found endless joy in her grandchildren, holding each of them with boundless love and devotion, never missing a chance to spoil them. Inspired by her example, they carried forward that same ambition, pursuing their own paths in medicine and engineering, continuing the legacy she had set before them.
A devout parishioner of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish, Janina lived her life rooted in her deep religious faith. As a longtime member of the St. Cecilia Polish Choir, she radiated throughout the church with her beautiful soprano voice, leaving a lasting impression.
Janina leaves behind a legacy of love and kindness that remains in the hearts of her family and all who knew her. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 33 years, William W. Obolewicz, her parents, Jan and Marianna Antoszczuk; her sister, Kazimiera Koszel, and her brother, Mariusz Antoszczuk. She is survived by her cherished daughters, Yola Gerwien and Dr. Annette Nusbaum, and her husband, Dr. Michael Nusbaum, along with her adored grandchildren, Justin Gerwien, Jonathan Gerwien, Max Nusbaum, Arielle Nusbaum, and Jacob Nusbaum, and many neighbors and dear friends.
A visitation will be held at the Dworzanski & Son Funeral Home on Saturday morning, April 11, from 9:00 to 10:15 AM, followed by a 10:30 AM Funeral Mass at St. John Paul II Parish (Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church). Interment to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington, NJ.
The Lord's Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be Thy name.
Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those
who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
Amen.
