Joseph W. Matechak entered into eternal rest peacefully on April 15, 2026, at Bayonne Medical Center. Born in Taylor, Pennsylvania, he lived most of his life in Bayonne. Joseph was a hardworking and devoted family man who built a long and respected professional career as a Project Manager for Kidder Peabody & Company for more than 10 years. Prior to that, he served as Manager of the Architecture Commission for Exxon Corporation of Bayonne for 25 years.
A proud and patriotic man, Joseph honorably served his country in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War. While stationed in Hawaii, he had the distinct pleasure of meeting Elvis Presley and assisted in coordinating his security through the military police. His devotion to honoring those who served continued long after his military years, as he went on to serve as liaison to the Memorial Day Parade Committee, helping to secure military personnel, tanks, half-track vehicles, jeeps, and marching units for the parade.
Joseph was a true sports enthusiast who faithfully followed the New York Yankees and took great pride in supporting his favorite team through the years. In his leisure time, he enjoyed old movies, collecting coins, comic books, and visiting different places to sample hot dogs prepared just the way he liked them with all the toppings.
Joseph will be remembered as a man of integrity whose love of family and strong values showed the true measure of a life well lived. He was predeceased by his dearly beloved wife of 49 years, Halina (Kuczynska) Matechak in 2018; his parents, Sylvester and Katherine (DeLeo) Matechak; and his brother, Arthur Matichak.
Left to honor his memory are his daughter, Denise Beard, and her husband, Rick; his son, Kevin Matechak, and his wife, Janine; his grandson, Jonathan Matechak, with whom he shared a deep and cherished bond, along with many nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held at the Dworzanski & Son Funeral Home on Wednesday, April 22, from 4:00 to 8:00 pm, with a Catholic Religious Service at 7:15 pm. On Thursday, April 23, a morning visitation will be held from 9:30 to 10:30 am, followed by interment with military honors at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington, NJ.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial donations be made in memory of Joseph to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to support our nation's veterans: https://www.pay.gov/paygov/form/start/321154002
