It is with great sorrow, that the Cena, Flora, and Ford families announce the passing of their strong, brave, kind, loving, devoted, and unimaginably caring mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, sister, and friend, Mary "Mema" Cena.
Born in Jersey City, Mary resided in Bayonne for most of her life. She had a passion for poetry that blossomed through the years which lead to her expressive creations being featured in a poem book.
During her younger years, she was an excellent swimmer and beach bum. Not only did she enjoy working as a lifeguard, but later went on to obtain her nursing certification. In her spare time, you could find her listening or dancing to her favorite artists from the 50's & 60's Golden-Oldies era.
Mary will be remembered for her beautiful smile, positive energy, and unwavering love and passion she had for taking care of all those around her. Her straightforward personality never left you wondering where you stood with her as she never hesitated to express her direct opinion or her beliefs regarding any subject matter.
She was a supportive grandmother who took tremendous pride in her grandchildren and great-grandchildren's accomplishments and boasted their achievements to anyone who would listen. She touched the lives of countless people, and her wonderful legacy will remain in their hearts for all eternity.
Mary is predeceased by her parents, William and Hilda (Flynn) Nickerson, her dearly beloved daughter, Christine Marinus (2020), her sisters, Gertrude Noyes, Audrey Kling, and Imelda Sariego, and her brothers, William, Edward (Buddy), Howard, and Steve Nickerson. Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Cheryl Giafardino (Ford) and her husband Thomas, her brother, Raymond Nickerson, her adored grandchildren, Day Anne, Christine and Patricia Cena, Tiffany Ford, Deda, Stephen and Todd Flora, 24 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and many dear friends.
A Memorial Gathering will be held at the Dworzanski & Son Funeral Home on Sunday, February 26, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.
Cremation was privately held at Rosehill Crematory in Linden.
